Window in memory of Revd William Kelly and wife, (William Kelly was vicar of St Paul’s from 1845 to 1883 – 38 years. His wife Sarah died in 1893)

The Parish Magazine (Shipley Home Words) of June 1894 says that the window was dedicated on 20th May 1894 and “the work was carried out by Heaton, Butler and Bayne of Garrick Street, Covent Garden, London.”

Below Gallery: Upper lights: three figures, probably angels, the middle one holding a scroll saying “Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business” (Luke 2:49 KJV ).

Below Gallery: Jesus in the Temple with the teachers (Luke 2: 41-51)

Left Scene: Mary and Joseph: over top is inscription IHS (Jesus) and scroll reading “Jesus in the Temple”

Centre Scene: Jesus as a boy of 12: over top are two cherub faces and a dove descending.

Right Scene: Teachers and scribes: over top is inscription XRS (Christ) and scroll reading “With the Doctors Luke II:46”

[Things to note:

• Joseph carrying a staff with a (water?) bottle on it.
• Scroll with fringe – probably the Torah
• the pulpit and lectern (surely not in the Temple?)
• buildings behind Joseph
• A Codex (early book) next to the pot with scrolls
• Jesus’ cloak is held by a broach with a cross on it
• Note the holding rod goes round the heads of Mary
  and Joseph instead of straight across]
